Just curious.

Does anyone use or have any experience with the Lee Valley cabinetmakers glue 2002 GF for use in making guitars or other instruments?

Stay away! The "GF" stands for "gap filler".

We do not need to fill any gaps in our instruments. The filler in the glue can only take away from the join, and lead to creep and other nasties.

Great for furniture, bad for instruments.

Thanks. That's what I wanted to know.

Had a cabinetmaker friend recommend it to me and thought I might like it for instruments.

Mario, have you ever used it?

Regardless, I'm going to disagree. I love the stuff and it's all that I have used for the past few years (along with at least a few other builders I know). All glues contain some solids and they are inconsequential with good joinery. In fact, I bet they help if the join has any imperfection.

It dries very hard.

If the join has a gap, it needs to be fixed before the clamps reach it...<bg>

I was given a half bottle of GF some years back, and just didn't feel it was anything special.

I do know some builders that use it all the time and think its great. I have a bottle sitting here and don't know if I will try it or not. After reading some of the other threads about glue I think the less glue between the wood joints the better. Hmmmm....wouldn't use it for bracing for sure. I'm sure it's a great glue and would hold fine. But I think their may be some better options.

The amount of glue remaining inside a joint will principally be a function of materials and clamping pressure, not the glue.

Many builders have suggested that they heard an improvement in their instruments after switching from an AR glue to hide glue. I noticed a similar improvement when I switched to the Lee Valley stuff. Did I imagine it? Perhaps. Was it an artifact of my building getting better? Perhaps. I would want no one to take my word on that without a little experimentation first.

Someone asked if the stuff was useful for instruments and I find it to be so based on my experience. That's different than speculating on how well something you've never used might or might not work. That's silly.
